(2-033) DIVERSITY NETWORK COMMITTEE INVITED SYMPOSIUM: Addressing Racism and Discrimination in Violence Prevention Interventions

Chair:  Caryn Rodgers, PhD, Albert Einstein College of Medicine

Speakers:

  • John E. Lochman, PhD, University of Alabama
  • Jennifer Lynn Alvidrez, PhD, National Institutes of Health, National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities
  • Katrina J. Debnam, PhD, University of Virginia

Reducing health disparities across racial/ethnic groups is a prominent goal in prevention science. Despite evidence that demonstrates the impact of racism and discrimination on health outcomes, few behavior interventions directly address racism and discrimination as a part of a universal intervention. Many existing approaches may fail to address this underlying cause of health disparities, weakening their ability to make sustainable change. The goal of this symposium will be to discuss the process of incorporating racism and discrimination intervention strategies into violence prevention programs. We will discuss specific examples of incorporating racism/discrimination strategies and also hear from a NIMHD program officer regarding the development of a funding mechanism to address this gap in violence prevention research and next steps for this work.

Wednesday, May 29, 2019, 7:15 pm – 8:15 pm

(2-030) SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP MEETING VII: SPR Diversity Network Committee- Addressing structural and interpersonal racism to reduce health disparities

Conveners: Krista Mehari, PhD, University of South Alabama, Rhonda Boyd, PhD, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia

Reducing health disparities across racial/ethnic groups is a prominent goal in prevention science. Race predicts physical and behavioral health and health behaviors, even when controlling for income and education. Exposure to structural and interpersonal racism may partially explain this. However, there has been minimal documentation of efforts to address racism as a part of interventions designed to reduce health disparities. Unfortunately, existing approaches may fail to address the underlying causes of health disparities, weakening their ability to make sustainable change. There has been also little research on the effectiveness of policies designed to reduce health disparities by reducing structural racism (e.g., guidance to remove “zero tolerance” policies in schools). The goal of this special interest group will be to explore intervention strategies designed to reduce racism at the interpersonal and structural levels. The discussion will focus on gaps in prevention science and directions for future research.
