Qualitative research is vital in prevention science by offering deep insights into the complex factors that influence health and behavior. It allows researchers to explore and understand the context, experiences, and perspectives of individuals and communities, essential for developing effective prevention strategies. The Qualitative Research in Prevention Science Special Interest Group (SIG) explores and advances qualitative methodologies in prevention science research. A key aim is to help deepen understanding of qualitative methodologies and their application in studying complex social, behavioral, and health-related issues. The SIG will focus on the nuances and strengths of qualitative research and serve as a forum for discussing innovative qualitative techniques, sharing best practices, and examining the integration of qualitative and quantitative methods. Members will have opportunities to network, collaborate, share their work, seek advice on methodological challenges, and stay updated on the latest developments in qualitative methodologies. Potential SIG activities include, but are not limited to, workshops, webinars, and conference sessions to help facilitate knowledge exchange and skill development. Additionally, the SIG would advocate for the recognition and value of qualitative research in prevention science, aiming to enhance its visibility and credibility within the broader scientific community. This group is ideal for individuals keen on leveraging qualitative methods to enrich prevention science research and contribute to developing and implementing evidence-based interventions.
SPR DIVERSITY NETWORK COMMITTEE ROUNDTABLE
Intentional Partnerships for Prevention Science Research with Diverse Populations
Thursday, May 30, 2024, 2:45 pm – 4:15 pm
Chair: Nadine Finigan-Carr, University of Maryland School of Social Work
Speakers/Presenters
- JeeWon Cheong, University of Florida
- Mariano Kanamori, University of Miami,
- Suzanne Randolph, The MayaTech Corporation
Diverse, vulnerable, and underserved populations are underrepresented as participants in prevention science research. Lack of representation of diverse groups limits the generalizability of research and may also significantly contribute to health disparities. Authentic and intentional partnerships with under-represented communities in all stages of research represent a key strategy to address the inequity and disparities. To support partnerships in research and broader adoption of collaborative approaches, prevention science researchers need guidance to change the long-standing culture and beliefs in academic and research centers that may lead to reluctance or inability to collaborate with diverse community partners. This roundtable offers practical guidance to learn about, facilitate, and strengthen engagement of diverse partners such that research can be co-designed and co-implemented and we can move forward toward health equity.
