Speaker: Charles Lea, PhD

Dr. Charles Lea is an Assistant Professor of Social Work at Columbia University in the City of New York. His research and scholarship examine the risk, resilience, and resistance behaviors of young Black men at-risk and involved with the juvenile/criminal legal systems; the dissemination and implementation of culturally grounded diversion and reentry interventions; and anti-carceral approaches to social work research and education. Through this work, Dr. Lea aims to develop knowledge and build theories that inform racially just and liberatory policies, practices, and interventions that can promote healthy development among young Black men and boys, as well as lessen their risk for health-compromising behaviors, arrest, incarceration, and recidivism. Dr. Lea’s research is informed by his practice experience with racial/ethnic minoritized youth and young adults in community, educational and correctional settings; prior research on reentry, school reform, and workforce and youth development policies, programs, and practices; and training in qualitative methodology and community-based participatory research. Dr. Lea received his Ph.D. in social welfare from the University of California, Los Angeles, MSW from the University of Michigan, and a B.A. in sociology from the University of California, Berkeley.
The aims of the DNC Speaker Series are to highlight research on prevention science and public health that is led by researchers from underrepresented groups and primarily conduct research with groups that are understudied (e.g., racial/ethnic minorities, individuals who identify as a sexual minority, individuals with disabilities). The presentation series will also aim to create a forum for the guest speaker(s) to share career/professional reflections as a researcher from an underrepresented group(s) and to promote discussions of diversity and inclusion in professions related to prevention, science and public health.
