Flexibility for federal employees and abstract submitters directly affected by U.S. government shutdown

November 6, 2025

We recognize the challenges many researchers may currently be facing due to the U.S. government shutdown, and that federal employees will be unable to submit abstracts by the November 7, 2025, deadline.  To ensure you still have an opportunity to share your research at the 2026 SPR Annual Conference, we’re providing exemptions to submit an abstract once the current restrictions are lifted.

Here are potential circumstances allowing for a deadline exemption.

  1. Federal government approval is required to complete your abstract, and either or both of the following apply to you.
    –  You are submitting any abstract type, and your abstract must first be approved by a federal agency.
    –  You are submitting an abstract for an organized paper symposium, organized team science panel, roundtable, TED-Like Talk, and one or more of your discussants or presenters are federal employees and you need their approval before you can include their names on the abstract submission.

For these circumstances, complete as much of your abstract submission as possible.  Via email you will receive confirmation that your abstract has been initiated with your abstract ID.  Please forward the email to Jennifer Lewis (jenniferlewis@preventionresearch.org) and explain your circumstances and confirm that your ability to submit an abstract is restricted due to the U.S. government shutdown.  Make sure to use the subject line:  “SPR Abstract ID# ______deadline submission exemption requested.”

  1. You are a federal employee, and you and/or your team plan to submit any abstract type.

As soon as possible after the federal government reopens,  initiate your abstract, receive your confirmation email, and forward to Jennifer Lewis (jenniferlewis@preventionreserch.org). Make sure to use the subject line:  “SPR Abstract ID# ______submission deadline exemption requested.”

Deadline extension:  When the federal government reopens, we intend to extend the exemption abstract submission deadline by 21 days for the above circumstances.  However, depending on when the government reopens, we will reassess the timeline and provide updated announcements.

SPR’s goal is to provide flexibility and every opportunity for you to participate in the Conference. Please contact Jennifer Lewis with any questions.
