Description: To advance partnerships and collaborative approaches within prevention Science, having a lifespan perspective is essential because it promotes an understanding of intergenerational solidarity and cohesion. Much of the prevention research foci stops after the transition to adulthood, despite an urgent need for more attention to prevention and intervention in mid-to-later life as population aging continues. Partnerships and collaborations are vital to the success of the aging network, which provides resources to our aging population. However, wide-spread dissemination and implementation of evidence-based strategies that address the unique health and social needs of middle aged and older adults are lacking.
The goal of this Special Interest Group is to foster ongoing discussion and identify action priorities for how prevention scientists can apply and expand prevention science principles to address shared challenges (e.g., depression; discrimination; health and leisure changes; stress; substance use) that occur across the life course and require cross-sector partnerships and collaborations.
Increased longevity necessitates an extension of the scientific conversation about dissemination and implementation to middle and later adulthood. There are many benefits in taking a lifespan prevention science perspective to ensure cross-sector collaboration and enhanced partnerships to promote more cohesion within the aging network to improve health outcomes for older adults. As prevention scientists, we can make a large contribution to this timely area of study and as a field, we have much to learn and room to expand our horizons.
